Block Escape

How to Play Block Escape

Block Escape is a challenging sliding block puzzle where you take on the role of a master strategist. Your mission is to clear a path for the 🟧 Hero block and guide it safely through the exit notch on the right side of the board.

The Objective

The game is played on a 6×6 grid filled with various obstacles. You must slide the grey blocks out of the way to create a horizontal opening for the red Hero block to reach the exit arrow () on the right.

Official Rules

The movement in Block Escape is governed by the physical orientation of the blocks:

  • Fixed Movement: Blocks can only move along their long axis.
    • Horizontal blocks (wider than they are tall) can only slide left and right.
    • Vertical blocks (taller than they are wide) can only slide up and down.
  • Collision: Blocks cannot jump over, overlap, or pass through one another.
  • The Hero: The red Hero block is always horizontal and is the only block capable of leaving the grid through the exit notch.
  • Winning: You complete the level when the Hero block slides completely off the right edge of the board.

Understanding the Scoring System

Your performance is tracked in the header of the game:

  • Level: Progress through 4 increasingly difficult stages, ranging from Beginner to Hard.
  • Moves: A move is counted every time you slide a block and release it in a new position.
  • Ratings: At the end of each level, you are awarded a title based on your efficiency:
    • 🌟 Master!: 15 moves or fewer.
    • ⭐ Excellent!: 16–30 moves.
    • 👍 Great!: 31–50 moves.
    • 💪 Nice!: Over 50 moves.

Top Strategies to Win

Think Backwards from the Exit

Look at the exit notch and identify which vertical blocks are currently blocking the Hero’s path. Then, look at what is blocking those blocks from moving up or down. Solving the puzzle often requires tracing this chain of obstacles back to the first moveable piece.

Create “Buffer” Space

Try to move blocks to the extreme edges of the grid whenever possible. This opens up the maximum amount of internal space, making it easier to “cycle” other blocks around the board.

Don’t Fear the Reset

If you find your blocks bunched up in a corner with no room to move, click the ↺ Reset button. Starting fresh with a clean board is often faster than trying to untangle a complex traffic jam.

The “Double-Block” Barrier

In harder levels, the game uses two small vertical blocks to act as a single tall barrier. You may need to move these individually to different parts of the board to create a large enough gap for a horizontal block to pass through.
